Freshwater pearls are a type of pearl that is produced using freshwater mussels. Japan was the first country to cultivate freshwater pearls in Lake Biwa, using the Biwa mussel. Nowadays most freshwater pearls are produced in China with over 1500 tons produced every year. Freshwater pearl harvests are usually bought still in the shell and are delivered to a first-stage factory where the freshwater pearls are cleaned and sorted by size and shape. The pearls are then transferred to smaller factories where they are treated in warm and cold chemical solutions and then bleached. After bleaching the pearls are then polished with commeal and wax. The pearls are drilled and matched into temporary strands when they are sold to producers. Most of the pearls will go on to produce beautiful freshwater pearl jewellery which is becoming increasingly popular as freshwater pearl jewellery becomes increasingly available. The most popular type of jewellery is freshwater pearl necklaces.
